What is Work?

Work is, in the Portuguese Language, a noun is male and flexion of the verb to work (in the 1st person singular of the Present Indicative). The term has origin in the Latin tripalium, which is an instrument of torture with three pieces of wood.

The meaning of Work has diverse conceptions. The most basic definition of the word has as its goal to define any activity, physical or intellectual, which is realized by the human being. Such activity has the purpose of making, altering or obtain something.

That is, the work brings the idea of being the set of activities carried out, characterised by the effort made by individuals with the objective to achieve the goal, end or purpose. In this case, the term work is also understood as the mental mechanisms or intellectual used for holding something.

When something is of great difficulty, one can use the word “work” to denote the “hassle”.

For example: “completing this project gave me a lot of work.”

The term work can still designate the place where they are applied to the devices for realization of something, or even for the own manufacturing/developing/development of something.

For example, in the phrases:

“I’d like to live closer to my work, so I would not need to use much public transport.”

“This is a beautiful work of carpentry.”

Work also defines the craft or profession of a person, this is your job.

For example:

“I don’t work, but I’m always looking for.”

“Her job is to write texts for blogs on the internet.”

Having a job guarantee to man the realization of the dreams and goals of life. It is also a way of making that human being show their actions and initiatives, in addition to developing skills and to refine them.

Thanks to the work, happens the coexistence between people of different opinions and values. Within a company, the job involves interaction among employees to strengthen and encourage the development of relationships and the success of the organization. Not only that, the work causes the human being to have their own space, and can gain respect and consideration for other individuals.

The work, when it is done with care and dedication, helps the self-esteem and the personal satisfaction and professional.

Child Labour

Child labour is the term used to indicate all of the work practised by persons who have least of the minimum legal age allowed to work, that is, it is the definition of the deprivation of their childhood, potential and dignity of children, impairing their physical and mental development.

Each nation determines a minimum legal age. In Brazil, for example, the work is not authorized – in any event, it is worth to stress – for children and adolescents between the ages of 0 and 13 years old. From the age of 14, there is the option of working as an apprentice, while that from 16 to 18 years, the work activities are permitted, but may not happen during the period of 22 hours in the evening at 5 o’clock in the morning, being that also can not be unhealthy or dangerous.

It is considered child labour one:

  • Deprives children from attending school,
  • Interferes with the education of children,
  • It is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful,
  • Forces the abandonment of the school in a way premature,
  • Requires school attendance combined with work excessively heavy and long.

Child labour is more frequent than most people think and can occur in both public places and private. In the rural area, for example, child labour involves mainly the domestic work, in addition to agricultural activities, charcoal and mining.

In the urban area, many children and adolescents can be found in factories and warehouses, for example, as well as customer service counter. However, as well as in the rural, the domestic child labor is very common in the urban landscape, that is, when the female children are forced to take care of the house cleaning, feeding or even the zeal of the younger brothers.

It is still possible to mention the involvement of adolescents and children by trafficking or sexual exploitation.

Unfortunately, there are many reasons for which a child or adolescent begin to work. Generally, the factors that have the greatest impact are those associated with the family situation, but there are also some that are exterior to it. Examples of these are:

  • The poverty of the family,
  • Large number of children,
  • Low education of parents,
  • Poor quality of education,
  • Work for own family.

Society can and should report any child labor, dialing in to the number 100 (the call is free and anonymous). You can still make any complaint on the website of the Public Ministry of Labor or in organs such as the Guardianship Council in the municipality.

Slave Labor

Slave labour is a universal concept, because it is the term used for all of the work in which the employer exploits the employee. Throughout history, the slave labor was the predominant form – the so-called slavery – where the activities were forced, with the dominance of one man over the other, preventing them to take any decisions freely, and not receive anything in exchange for the “work” provided.

The expression slave labor still defines all the signings made in a lawful manner and that, by the end, they end up exploiting the worker.

Currently, it uses the term “modern slavery” to designate the relations of work where people are forced to engage in activities against their will, under threats, physical and psychological violence and other forms of intimidation.

Anyway, the forced labor (or slave labor) has two characteristics: the use of coercion and the denial of freedom. In rural areas, for example, the worker remains in the local geographically isolated – which makes the complaint or discovery of this illegality.

Slave labor was declared illegal from the mid-NINETEENTH century, starting wage labour as the dominant form of work. However, slave labor is still present, even in the XXI century, or even that the Law is abolished, and slavery still happens in practice.

Still occurs the trafficking of women for forced prostitution in some poor regions of countries such as Russia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Recently, in Brazil, were found several persons in conditions akin to slavery. The State of Pará leads the ranking of states where more workers were rescued from these situations. Then immediately appear in the states of Mato Grosso, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Bahia.
