What is Prophylaxis?

Prophylaxis is the set of precautions we can take to prevent certain diseases.

The first idea that comes to mind is vaccine, right? Yes, the vaccine is a form of prophylaxis very important for many diseases, but there are also some issues related to our hygiene habits.

Hygiene and prophylaxis

Hygiene is not connected only to the well-being; some habits are fundamental to the maintenance of our health. Are care sometimes so small that not even noticed that we are constantly forgetting.

Want some examples?

  • dry well between the toes after bathing;
  • wash your hands after going to the bathroom;
  • avoid bringing the hands to the mouth;
  • do not chew the pencil or the pen while thinking;
  • no scratching of the eyes (even after washing your hands, ok? You can get hurt)
  • do not sneeze in your hand and wipe on his pants, on the car seat, in the backpack of fellow;
  • clean the paws of your dog after his walk in the street;
  • thoroughly wash the fruit before eating;

And more a list giant.

Serious diseases

There are some diseases very serious, that could easily be avoided with the adoption of some habits very simple.

We should use the knowledge they already have about the medicine not only when we are already with some disease, but also as prophylaxis.

Some examples of serious diseases that can even kill you, and that could even get close to us if only we’d watch with more zeal for our free:

  • hospital-acquired infections;
  • AIDS;
  • measles;
  • tuberculosis;
  • Chagas disease;

And again we could have a list giant.

Dental prophylaxis

The dental prophylaxis (or the prophylaxis dental is the professional cleaning that we should do at least once a year at the dentist. (Ideal would be to make prophylaxis dental every six months, but so many people have fear of the dentist…). We know that it is not enough just to follow all those guidelines that the whole world knows; somehow, some sujeirinhas can go on accumulating and causing disease (not just decay).

The dental prophylaxis can prevent problems such as:

  • bleeding;
  • inflammation in the gums;
  • bad breath;
  • softening of the teeth;
  • the formation of tartar;

Problems are quite common, but that may indicate serious diseases. If you have any of these symptoms, ask a dentist.

Prophylaxis of malaria

Malaria is a disease caused by a type of protozoan, the plasmódio. The most common form of transmission of malaria is the bite of the mosquito Anopheles (like a black-winged stilt). Climate regions tropical and subtropical are the most affected.

The symptoms of malaria are high fever, chills alternating with hot flashes, pains in the head and in the body, lack of appetite, skin yellowing, tiredness intense. A feature peculiar of this disease is the appearance of symptoms every two or three days, ceasing between one crisis and another.

There is no vaccine against malaria, therefore, the prophylaxis consists in avoiding the sting of the mosquito.

Some of the actions of prophylaxis of malaria (in case of travel to any region where it is present):

  • use repellent on the whole body;
  • use shirts or long-sleeve shirt;
  • use screens and mosquito nets;
  • avoid swimming in locations with standing water, such as ponds, mainly at dusk;

In places where there are many cases of malaria, measures for the eradication of the mosquito vector are required as part of the prophylaxis.

Prophylaxis of dengue fever

Dengue fever is also a disease transmitted by the bite of a mosquito, the Aedes aegypti. There are two kinds of dengue; some of the symptoms of dengue are: * high fever that appears suddenly), headache, very strong, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite and of taste, spots on the skin similar to measles, extreme tiredness, pain in the joints. In the case of hemorrhagic dengue, the symptoms are the same, however, passed the fever, the more severe symptoms appear:

  • abdominal pain very strong and continuous;
  • vomiting;
  • bleeding from the nose and gums;
  • agitation and/or mental confusion;
  • difficulty breathing;
  • loss of consciousness

The symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic worsen quickly and the patient can die before you after 24 hours from the emergence of one of the symptoms of post-fever.

To be transmitted by the bite of a mosquito, the prevention of dengue fever is made with the combat of outbreaks of the mosquito, which reproduces in standing water. Among the measures for prophylaxis of the disease are:

-keep the boxes water always closed (using the appropriate lid);

-clean the gutters, so that nothing prevents the water running;

-fill with sand the small plates of potted plants;

-store bottles upside down;

-put the garbage in plastic bags, keeping the trash closed at all times;

-keep an eye on if the rain water gets accumulated in some place.

Prophylaxis of endocarditis

Endocarditis is a disease characterized by infection in the tissues of the heart. It occurs mainly in patients that have some type of valvulopathy (problems related to the valves of the heart). It is very serious and the treatment requires hospitalization for about a month, with the use of high doses of antibiotics endovenosos.

In people with a higher risk of endocarditis, prophylaxis includes special care for the maintenance of health. The microorganisms that cause disease can enter the body by any route, especially during surgical procedures. More careful with dental health is a very simple prophylaxis of endocarditis, with the view that the procedures done by the dentist also expose a person to micro-organisms. In case the patient may need to go through any surgery, prophylaxis consists of the administration of medicines such as penicillin.

Prophylaxis in chess

The word prophylaxis is not used only in the field of medicine; prophylaxis in chess is to prevent the adversary to be able to put your strategy into practice. During the game of chess, there are not only moments of attack; it is sometimes necessary to use the reasoning to predict the moves of the opponent and counter them.
